Holetown Festival: Where Barbados’ Past Comes Alive

Holetown Festival: Where Barbados’ Past Comes Alive
Music, parades, and culture in February.

Gabriela, an architect from Miami, had always admired Barbados for its postcard-perfect beaches. But during her February trip to Holetown, she discovered something far deeper: the Holetown Festival, a vibrant week-long celebration honoring the island’s rich heritage.

Held every February, the festival marks the arrival of the first English settlers in Holetown in 1627. Gabriela arrived on the opening day and was greeted by a lively street parade, complete with costumed dancers, steelpan bands, and a procession of historical reenactments. “It feels like stepping into history,” she thought, watching children dressed as 17th-century settlers.

The festival’s craft fair, held in the Holetown Monument Park, was a treasure trove of local art and handmade goods. Gabriela admired the intricate pottery, vibrant paintings, and colorful fabrics while snacking on Bajan fish cakes from a nearby food stall.

That evening, she attended the Police Tattoo, a unique display of military precision mixed with cultural performances. The highlight for Gabriela was the tuk band—a lively fusion of African drum rhythms and British military brass instruments that filled the night with infectious energy.

Over the next few days, Gabriela explored the festival’s many events, from the folk singing competitions to the historic walking tours of Holetown. On her final night, she joined locals at a beachside concert where calypso, reggae, and soca artists performed under the stars. “This is more than a festival,” she thought. “It’s a celebration of everything Barbados is.”

As she prepared to leave, Gabriela reflected on her experience. The Holetown Festival had shown her that Barbados wasn’t just a beautiful island—it was a place with a soul, shaped by its history and people.
